October is still a good month to apply your fall application of grass herbicide. This will be of tremendous help with next springs weed problem. Remember, just the pre-emergent herbicide no fertilizer. October is also a great time to prune some of your shrubbery that has just finished their bloom season. Rain hopefully is now falling more frequently, so take a look at your automatic sprinkler system and make sure that you don’t over water.
Have you put out your fall Mums or winter pansies yet? Well now’s the time! Mums are considered a perennial, so they may be planted after blooming to enjoy next season. Don’t forget to give them adequate mulch for the cold winter. Pansies are an annual so they have to be replanted every year. However, they will remain pretty throughout the winter season with proper water, pruning, and fertilizer.
You may also want to consider your fall and winter veggie garden. Depending on your geographic location you can still plant. If you are not inclined to plant for the fall consider covering your area, assuming it has been cleaned from the spring planting. A good weed fabric left down for the winter will keep your area free of winter weeds and ready to go for spring.
