The holiday season is over and now it’s time to shed those unwanted pounds. I know that I probably picked up a few myself. I can’t think of a better exercise program than good old fashion yard work. Yep, it’s cold out there so bundle up and let’s get started.
Hopefully by now you have protected your sensitive plants for the winter if you have left them outside. Also, let’s not forget about our pets as well. I’m a big dog lover; I have two boxers Bonnie and Clyde. I got off point for a moment so back to the subject at hand.
First; if you over seeded your warm season grass with an annual grass seed for the winter it’s time to put out an application of fertilizer. Secondly, if you are going to plant a spring garden you need to go ahead and purchase your seeds and start planning your sowing season.
Let’s back up for a moment. If you read my blog last month I mentioned mulching hopefully you have done so, if not you better add that to the to do list.
Also now is a great time to get a jump on getting your soil sampled before the spring rush. You may also want to consider doing some dormant pruning on deciduous plants (no leaves).
The items listed above should get those calories burning. And I know while you are out there you can find more wonderful things to do in your landscape for the upcoming spring season.
Good luck and stay warm,
Weekend gardener/ Mike Wilson
